Comet Sprint 48 / Daylight Sprint 20 Review (Oct. 8, 2025 – Oct. 27, 2025)
Comet Sprint 48/Daylight Sprint 20 Review
Fall Workcycle: Sprint 2, Oct. 8 – Oct. 27, 2025
GOALS:
Complete a connected discovery prototype (ADRL Lite)
- Search API endpoint behaves as expected; remaining API endpoints for images and downloads are done (Daylight, Orange Empire)
- Work on downloads is ongoing, but we made progress as we worked on IIIF
- Thumbnail image returns with path provided from the API endpoint
- IIIF manifest returns from the API endpoint
- Daylight / ADRL Lite component registry infrastructure & deployment flow is finalized (Infrastructure focus)
- We have finalized our approach to configuring ADRL Lite to use deployed Daylight components
- We still need to get QA builds for these products that are configured using this approach
- IIIF works for all dependent products (Orange Empire, ADRL Lite)
- We made substantial improvements to IIIF without breaking things in Starlight
- We still need to do some analysis on whether there is more work to be done with IIIF in Comet
- ADRL Lite IIIF work is ongoing; we have manifests, but we still need to incorporate a viewer, which then needs to be styled
- Content can be published from Comet to ADRL Lite
- This was mostly put off for next Sprint, but we think we have a good picture of what is needed
- Component support for Complex Objects (Comet, ADRL Lite, Daylight)
- We had some productive discussions, but still need to flesh out some requirements
- Complex object sample in API endpoint is now being returned
Environments / Application Reliability
- Comet, Orange Empire, Infrastructure
- We did quite a lot of testing across multiple environments, doing our best to replicate how users would interact with the system in a production setting
- We also did some investigative work on what’s slowing down a lot of our operations in Comet. The next step is to review and discuss the findings and identify next steps
- Successfully addressed an issue with Comet’s File Manager becoming non-responsive
Comet MVP Features
- Validate DR plan (Infrastructure)
- Storage and DB have substantial progress
- Initial pass done, with another round of verification pending
Reduce Tech Debt
- Moving off Bitnami (no new updates)
- The big thing remaining is Solr. Alex and Matt need to talk with Rob Kaufman about coming up with a plan, but that hasn't happened yet
- Other transitions are in progress and are being testing (e.g. Postgres for UCSB)
What’s next?
Continuing loose ends from this latest Sprint, Lark integration, and maintaining “order” with Bulkrax imports
